The Board of The Village Festival of New Performance Inc. announces that co-founding Artistic Director is leaving The Village.
After close to 11 years and 41 incarnations of the Village across Australia, Ian has decided that the time is right to part ways and concentrate on his principal work as a theatre director.
Together with Stuart Vaskess and Suzanne Kalk, Ian Pidd founded The Village Festival as a multi-arts festival that creates a highly accessible environment for artists and audience to meet each other. Indeed, it sometimes purposely seeks to blur the distinction between performer and audience. With Ian’s guidance, the Village Festival has featured an incredibly broad range of artistic expressions from one-on-one experiences to mass events.
Whilst the community of artists, designers, performers, musicians, crew and volunteers built around the Village are very saddened by Ian’s departure, the parting is entirely amicable. The Board would like to take the opportunity to thank Ian for his incredible generosity, insight, energy, creativity and indefatigable optimism over a sustained period. We wish Ian success in all its forms across his multiple endeavours. The Board has bestowed Ian life membership of The Village, and we look forward to welcoming Ian to any and all of The Village Festivals in the future.
Ian leaves The Village Festival in excellent shape. Suzanne Kalk will take the role as sole Artistic Director, Stuart Vaskess will take a new position of Festival Director and Ariel Valent will continue in the role of General Manager.
Ian Pidd says: “The last ten years of working with Stuart and Suz creating and growing The Village has been an extraordinarily rewarding period of my working life. I am immensely proud of what we have achieved, especially being able to employ thousands of artists across every imaginable discipline to create work for audiences numbering in the hundreds of thousand at multiple events across the country. I don’t think any of us imagined it would get this far! I have every confidence that The Village will prosper into the future and wish Stu and Suz and Ariel and the team all the very best.”
The Village Festival now calls for Expressions of Interest from those with programming expertise and looks forward to welcoming one or more people into The Village tent.
“We take this opportunity to honour the exceptional work of the co-founding directors Stuart, Suzanne, and Ian who have explored and developed contemporary creative forms through The Village for more than ten years” says Justine Donohue, Chair of The Village Festival board. “We now look forward to welcoming some fresh programming energy into the Village.”
