More than 2000 locals and visitors warmed body and soul as the creative folk of the Castlemaine district celebrated the Winter solstice. Back for the third year in 2015.
Music, physical theatre, circus, storytelling, visual art and the uncategorisable all found their place within one of the highly decorated tents, out in the open park or around the communal fire.
Highlights included So You Think You Can Interpretive Dance, the Famous Village Dog Show, the sideshow carnival with old-style games and lolly shop re-invented for 2015, 10 Minute Dance Parties, local storytelling and the Rascal-maine Stage, run entirely by young people.
The fire lighting ritual that is the culmination of Stories of Castlemaine took place at dusk. This project has collected personal stories about Castlemaine places from town elders, which have then been artistically interpreted by five groups of local community members under the guidance of experienced artists. These stories were brought to life through steampunk theatre, music, circus, puppetry and pyrotechnics.
Good local food and drink were also on offer, adding to the convivial atmosphere.
